Design Kan Podcast, hosted by Kristina May (Denmark, 2025)

Podcast Feature — Design, Legacy and Relevance In this conversation, I discuss the design legacy of Jacob Jensen and how it continues to evolve in a contemporary context. We explore the balance between tradition and innovation, and how a strong design philosophy can remain relevant while engaging both loyal and new audiences. As I note in the episode, “Our legacy is not our destination”—it is a foundation for continued development. The discussion covers our approach to user-centered design and the experience we aim to orchestrate across products and touchpoints. I also share insights into the core principles—Distance, Closeness and Touch—which continue to guide designers working with the brand today. Finally, I reflect on my own journey—from being inspired by Jacob Jensen’s work as a young designer to leading the brand today—and the responsibility of carrying a strong Danish design heritage forward in a way that remains meaningful, relevant and globally resonant.

Jacob Jensen Electric Kettle

The Jacob Jensen kettle has a simple, elegant metal housing, available in black, silver or green. The display integrated into the handle is activated as soon as a hand approaches and switches to sleep mode when the device is not in use. A gentle acoustic signal sounds as soon as the water reaches the desired temperature; the keep-warm function maintains it at a constant temperature until it is needed. The kettle offers seven preset temperatures, from 70 to 90 degrees Celsius.

Statement by the Jury

This kettle enriches the user’s daily life by combining everyday functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Jacob Jensen Long Slot Toaster

The Jacob Jensen Long Slot Toaster combines high-quality materials with a minimalist design. The user interface activates when approached and automatically switches to sleep mode after use. The motion-controlled display shows the toasting level and remaining time. Seven toasting settings and programmes for bagels, reheating and defrosting allow for individual results. Thanks to its attractive appearance from all sides, the toaster can be placed not only against a wall, but also positioned freely.

Statement by the Jury

The Jacob Jensen Long Slot Toaster appeals with its elegance, which it achieves through the materials as well as the calm, carefully modelled forms.

Jacob Jensen Optical Smoke Alarm

The Jacob Jensen Smoke Alarm Optical merges the requirements of modern safety technology with aesthetic design. A pulsing light beam detects smoke particles and triggers an alarm if necessary, while the integrated battery with a service life of ten years guarantees long-lasting protection. The fabric cover made from 99 per cent recycled polyester lends a soft, distinctive aesthetic. Thanks to the five colour variants inspired by Scandinavian nature, the smoke alarm blends harmoniously into any interior.

Statement by the Jury

The Jacob Jensen Smoke Alarm Optical is a harmonious combination of a convincing safety function with a homely design concept.
